Make a delicious coffee drink at home! This black forest homemade frappe is a simple recipe and a fun take on blended coffee. It makes a wonderful dessert during the warm months.

The other night I was making German sausage with onions and spaetzle and wanted a German-inspired dessert that was easy and not very heavy. Black Forest Cake is a great German dessert but not easy or light, so I made a homemade frappe version.

It’s a fun take on the dessert and really simple to make. It’s also a unique frappe flavor which makes it even more fun.

I love making homemade coffee drinks, especially frappes. You can save money plus you get to experiment with unique flavors you can’t get anywhere else.

Black Forest Homemade Frappe

Black Forest cake is usually made of four layers of chocolate cake, cherries, and whipped cream. It’s frosted very simply with whipped cream and chocolate shavings, plus a few cherries of course. Kirschwasser (cherry schnapps) is used to give more favor to the cake and whipped cream.

These flavors all work really well with coffee making it a great option for a homemade frappe. You could even add a bit of cherry schnapps for a more adult treat.

Making Homemade Frappes

While the best frappes are made with a high powered blender like a Vitamix blender you can make them in any blender at home. I just use my pretty basic blender, it just takes a bit longer and the ice may be a bit more chunky.

The basic idea is coffee, milk, and ice. You can also use dairy-free milk, I prefer oat milk. To make it more authentic you can use espresso instead of strong coffee. I like to list strong coffee in the recipe because not everyone has an espresso machine at home.

You can use this recipe and change up the flavors to make whatever kind of homemade frappe you’d like. You can also try more of the ones I’ve come up with.

  • Mint Chocolate Chip Frappe
  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Frappe

And of course, you should try this black forest frappe. It’s truly delicious and a fun warm-weather treat.

I’m not a coffee drinker, but if I was I think this would be how I would have to drink it!
