Hello and welcome to my homemaking and lifestyle blog! I’m Lisa and I have a passion for vintage homemaking and vintage recipes, with sustainability mixed in. I believe homemaking is for everyone and should be accessible and make our lives better.

The Story Behind Retro Housewife Goes Green

I created Retro Housewife Goes Green in 2008 to share with my friends and family, it was the time when everyone had a blog and they were very personal.

Slowly most of my friends and family moved to Facebook and quit blogging. I had grown to love it though so I kept growing my blog. It also turned into a place for me to share my passion for vintage homemaking and vintage recipes.

At the time blogging was pretty new and the lifestyle blogs that focused on homemaking were generally tied to religion and strict gender roles and I believed we needed something different. Homemaking that helped us learn from past homemakers but showed how homemaking can be for everyone.

Retro Housewife Goes Green Mission

At Retro Housewife Goes Green, my mission is to show everyone that we all deserve a home we feel comfortable in and that taking care of it doesn’t have to be hard. And we can learn from 1950s housewives and other eras without bringing back the inequality.

I also seek to show simple ways to be more sustainable because we also deserve a planet that is clean and preserved for generations to come.

What You Will Find on Retro Housewife Goes Green

  • Practical Cleaning Tips: Cleaning is something few of us enjoy but it’s something that needs to be done and here you will find tips that make it easier.
  • Vintage Recipes: I have been baking since I was a toddler and I’ve always been fascinated by vintage cookbooks and magazines and the recipes they contained. I take these recipes, test them, and if they are worth sharing I give modern directions and tips.
  • Frugal Living Tips: I bring back tips from the past that can help us live a more simple and frugal modern life.
  • Sustainable Living Tips: I’ve been an environmentalist most of my life and I love to help people find manageable ways to live more sustainable.

What You Will Not Find

  • AI Recipes: AI recipes are stolen from real creators and aren’t tested. They often don’t work and can cause us to waste food. My recipes are tested by me and either created by me or updated from vintage recipes.
  • Generative AI: I did use generative AI when it first got really popular briefly for some tasks. However, I took the time to dive into the problems with generative AI and stopped using it completely. I have also worked to remove any of it from this site and no full content was ever written using generative AI and never will be! No generative AI photos are used here either. All photos are from me, stock photos, or vintage images.
  • Tradwife Values: I am a progressive and inclusive creator. Here you will find vintage style but not vintage values.
  • Judgement: While I generally eat more “natural” food I believe in the 80/20 rule and don’t believe food has any moral value. Some food feeds our body and some feeds our soul. The same goes for products in our homes, there are many ingredients I believe it’s best to avoid but I will not judge you for your choices.

The team here at Retro Housewife Goes Green is just me, Lisa. I will have guest posts from other creators from time to time and sometimes I get help with little tasks but for the most part this is a one woman show. You can read more about me here on the site.
