Making homemade coffee drink recipes at home is fun and easier than you think, and can save you money. It’s also a great way to reduce waste and avoid spending money with companies you may not support.

Originally shared in September 2017, it was updated on March 26, 2025, to add more great recipes and to add some of my favorite supplies for you to check out.

We often think of fancy coffee drinks as being more modern, something we associate with Starbucks and other big coffee chains. However, something I’ve noticed in vintage homemaking magazines and vintage cookbooks is that they loved to make fun coffee drinks as well.

A lot of the recipes I’ve seen call for instant coffee, which has been around since the 1700s, but started to look more like the instant coffee we know in the mid-century.

It’s interesting to me that recently, thanks to the TikTok whipped coffee trends, instant coffee is gaining popularity again. It may be time to bring back some of the vintage coffee recipes! Hint, hint, I’m going to do just that, so be sure you are signed up for my emails to be the first to know.

You can, of course, make coffee drink recipes at home using other forms of coffee as well. I love using my moka pot (also sometimes known as a stovetop espresso maker) for delicious coffees at home. Any coffee maker will usually do.

Making fancy coffee drink recipes at home is a great way to save money, get creative, and reduce waste. I started getting into making homemade coffee drinks several years ago. At the time, we didn’t have any coffee shops in town, and I wanted to be able to drink fancy coffee drinks. I have mostly created frappes, but I often enjoy making hot coffee drinks at home as well. It’s fun to see what you can come up with.

If you want to start making coffee drinks at home, I’ve found some amazing coffee recipes you should try. It’s going to be hard to pick which one to start with!

Must-Have Coffee Supplies

Some supplies are helpful to have when you want to start making fancy coffee drinks at home. You don’t need a huge espresso maker or anything fancy, but these items help a lot. A good blender is also helpful.

  • Stovetop Espresso Maker (also known as a moka pot)
  • French Press
  • Milk Frother
  • Coffee Grinder
  • Soda Fountain Glasses

I like to order coffee beans and instant coffee from Thrive Market. They are a great company and one of my favorite places to shop for food. I have a full Thrive Market review if you are interested in starting to shop from there.

You can also find some great recipes for simple syrups that can be used in your coffee in Living Planet Friendly’s ebook, Simple Syrups from Scratch.

Just remember, you don’t need a ton of gadgets to make delicious coffee at home. Start with what you already have and add things as you find you need them. And enjoy!

You are absolutely right about a French press making the best coffee. We got rid of our coffee maker about a year after we bought the French press because we never used it again.

These coffee drinks sound delicious and we will definitely be giving them a try.

A coffee roaster told me that Starbucks over roasts their beans. That's why they have a nasty burnt taste. If you have left over coffee you can freeze it in ice cube trays and use the cubes for iced coffee later.

I filter my French press coffee through a canvus coffee filter as I pour each cup so I won't have silt in the bottom of my coffee cup. I drink stonge Cuban stele coffee.

My first thought when I get up is, how soon can I press my pot of coffee! I had to buy a stainless steel press pot because I broke our glass one when full of hot unpressed coffee– whaaaa! We LOVE a regional roaster, Roos Coffee out of Ann Arbor, fair trade, organic, fresh roasted the day they ship and they use compostable bags. Super yummy and never burnt. http://roosroast.com/
