Create a sustainable fall this year with eco-friendly fall decor that you can feel good about using. You’ll find all kind of beautiful fall decor pieces that you can work into your current decor.

I originally shared this post in 2014, I’ve updated it to share items that are currently available and to have even more information to help you have a sustainable fall. It was most recently updated on September 5, 2024.

Being more sustainable is always a goal of mine and that comes into play with my decorating as well. One way I do this is by decorating with vintage fall decor. However, some vintage items can contain lead and they can be hard to find. That’s why I like to mix in other items that are still eco-friendly.

One of the most sustainable things you can do when it comes to decor is buying items that you can use year after year. I have seen an increasing trend of buying cheap decor and just trashing it each year. This is only becoming more of an issue with the rising popularity of sites like Temu.

Things to Look for When Buying Eco-Friendly Fall Decor

There are some key things to consider when you are looking to buy sustainable fall decor. These are some of the things I make sure to look for while shopping.

  • Sustainable Materials: Look for decor made from renewable resources like bamboo, reclaimed wood, organic cotton, or glass. Also items that are upcycled are a great choice.
  • Recyclable or Biodegradable Items: Choose products that can be easily recycled or will naturally break down without harming the environment. Real pumpkins and other items found in nature can add to your decor.
  • Locally Sourced Products: Support local artisans and reduce your carbon footprint by purchasing decor that’s made close to home.
  • Durability and Reusability: Opt for decor that is high-quality and can be used year after year to minimize waste.
  • Non-Toxic or Natural Dyes and Paints: Ensure the decor is free from harmful chemicals, opting for items that use natural or water-based paints.
  • Minimal or Recycled Packaging: Choose items with little to no packaging, or packaging that is made from recycled or recyclable materials.
  • Fair Trade or Ethically Made: Ensure your decor is produced in a manner that supports fair wages and ethical working conditions. Choosing handmade or second hand items are a great way to do this.

You may not be able to check off every box with each item but choosing items that check off at least some of these boxes will help you reduce your impact.

I want to highlight some items that I love to use in my home as well as similar items. Most of these are handmade and hopefully will give you a bit of inspiration for a sustainable fall.

These items are made with sustainable materials and are made to last year after year.

Fall Paperless Towels

Decorating with practical items like these reusable "paper" towels is a great way to keep your decor sustainable.

Fall Cloth Napkins

Another great practical fall decor item is cloth napkins. I made the switch to cloth napkins years ago and it saves a lot of money and they look so much nicer. I love having seasonal options to switch things up.

Rechargeable Flameless Votive Candles

I love using flameless candles in my decor throughout the year. It's a safe way to add candles to your home and better for the air quality. I have made the switch to rechargeable ones because you avoid the waste of batteries. I also love having a timer option.

Velvet Pumpkins

I have two of these beautiful velvet pumpkins so far and plan to keep adding to my collection. They are very well made. I've had mine for a few years and they still look brand new.

Safer Fall Candles

If you do want to burn candles look for options that use natural wax, lead-free wicks, and don't contain phlatates in their scents. These candles are a great option that check all of those boxes.

Free Printable Fall Wall Art

Printing free wall art on recycled paper is a nice eco-friendly option. Use frames you already have for a really affordable piece of decor.

Glass Pumpkin

Glass pumpkins are another great decor piece that can last a lifetime. Just be sure to store them safely to prevent them breaking.

Felted Acorns

I've used felted acorns in my fall decor for years. They make great filler and come in all kinds of colors.

Pumpkin Fall Throw Pillow Covers

Using pillow covers is an easy way to change up your decor. Choose washable ones that you can use over and over again.

Pumpkin Yard Stakes

Fall decor pieces that are made of upcycled materials like these pumpkin stakes are another great option.

Throw blankets are easy decor choices as well. Look for ones made of cotton and made to last.

Fall Swedish Dish Cloths

Another eco-friendly item I have in my home that I often switch up for the seasons is Swedish dish cloths. They are like a cross between a cloth and a sponge and a great paper towel alternative.

Other Eco-Friendly Fall Resources

I have some other great resources to share if you are interested in having a more eco-friendly fall. It’s one of my favorite times of the year and it’s great to enjoy it while knowing you are doing your part to be a bit more sustainable.
