Summer is a fun time of the year for the whole family but it can also come with hazards. Keep your family safe with these summer safety tips. To help you stay safe this summer, Earthley is sponsoring this post.

Few things are better than summer while you are a kid. I used to swim as much as possible and play endlessly with my friends. It was a great carefree time.

While summers are a lot of fun they can come with some dangers that threaten to take the fun out of summer. No one wants that so if you make sure you are prepared you can avoid these dangers.

Summer Safety Tips

First Aid Kit

If you don’t already have a first aid kit you want to get one. You can create your own or buy a pre-made one. If you already have one now is the time to make sure all of the supplies are fully stocked.

The Red Cross has great information on how to make your own first aid kit. If you like using natural products you may want to consider adding some things like arnica or a healing salve.

Sun Protection

I’m very fair skinned and have always had to be careful about the sun. I wear some form of sun protection on my face every day but if I spend much time outside in the spring or summer I have to be even more careful.

There are a lot of options out there for sunscreen but be sure to look for ones that don’t use synthetic chemicals. Many of the synthetic chemicals used in sunscreen can be very harsh and even harmful. Look for mineral-based and safer sun protection options instead.

If you do end up with a sunburn you want to take care of it right away to prevent more damage to your skin and possible peeling. My husband happened to get a sunburn recently while mowing, he forgot a spot when putting on sunscreen, and I’ve been putting Earthley’s Sun Soothe on it. He said it does help with the pain and so far no peeling.

Pest Protection

I’ve never liked bug bites, does anyone? But after my dad ended up with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever last summer I’m even more caution. He was very sick and it made all of us see how serious some of these diseases that are carried by pests can be.

Now if I’m outside for any amount of time I like to use some kind of pest repellent. I prefer natural options because I don’t really want to spray pesticides or harsh chemicals on my body.

This year I’ve been trying out Earthley’s Pest-Aside. It’s a stick instead of a spray which is really nice for someone like me that has asthma. Even natural sprays can be irritating for your lungs, plus you have to wait until you are outside to apply them unless you want that smell in your house.

It rubs on easily and works well with natural ingredients like neem oil, citronella, and patchouli. These are all ingredients that have been shown to help keep pests away naturally.

Be sure to also always check yourself and family for ticks if you have been in an area where you may have been around them. Removing ticks quickly helps reduce the risk of tick-borne diseases.

Fire Safety

In many areas in the country, wildfires are more common during the hot and dry summer months. It’s a good time to review your fire safety plans or create one if you haven’t already.

Your fire safety plan should be reviewed by the whole family. Everyone needs to know what to do if there is a fire in the home or nearby.

Other than having a fire safety plan here are some tips to help keep you safe.

  • Have at least one garden hose by your house and a faucet.
  • Have multiple fire extinguishers in the home and make sure everyone knows how to use them.
  • Have working smoke detectors in every bedroom, the kitchen, and hallways. Test them monthly and change the batteries twice a year.
  • Stay alert to any burn bans in your area and follow the rules of the bans when in effect.

Emergency Plan

In addition to a fire safety plan, your family should have a general emergency plan. In my area, it’s important to be prepared for things like floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, and wildfires. You want to be aware of common natural disasters in your area as well.

Having plans for any emergencies that could come up is important. If you have kids and use a babysitter be sure they are aware of the plan as well.

You can keep track of your emergency plan on this free printable. Make sure you have a copy that is easy to access in your home, give one to any people involved in child care, and immediate family.

Bonus Tip

Earthley products

Don’t forget that all year you want to choose natural products for your family that keep them safe from questionable ingredients and things like endocrine disruptors.

Companies like Earthley, use only natural ingredients in their products so you can feel safe using them. They have everything from diaper cream to tooth powder. They can meet most of your personal care and baby needs.

I’m glad I found Earthley because they have great products that use all-natural, plant-based ingredients in their least processed forms and it’s a woman-owned business, which I love.

Shop Earthley’s summer collection and grab Pest Aside, Sun Shield, Sun Soothe, and more HERE. Use code: RETRO20 to save 20%, through 6/1/19.
