Sleep linen spray is a great way to create a more relaxing atmosphere in your room each night. It’s easy to make and leaves a lovely scent.
When trying to fall asleep we want to be as relaxed as possible. A dark room and comfortable bed are essential. Some scents can also help us feel more relaxed.
Lavender is my personal favorite relaxing scent. I grow fresh lavender and tend to gravitate to it for candles and other scented items. However, candles aren’t the safest thing to use while trying to go to sleep and fresh lavender isn’t available all year.
An easy way to use lavender to help you feel relaxed while trying to sleep is a linen spray. Many stores sell linen sprays, including lavender scented ones. The problem with these is the ingredients are often very questionable. Thankfully, it’s really easy to make your own!
Sleep Linen Spray
Ingredients
- Vodka
- Lavender Essential Oil
- 4 oz Colored Glass Spray Bottle
Directions
- Fill your spray bottle almost all the way with vodka.
- Add 10-20 drops of lavender essential oils.
- Put the lid on and shake well before each use.
It’s that easy. Just spray on your pillows or your blankets before bed. You can also use it as a room spray if you don’t want to spray it on your bedding.
I like to use vodka for the spray because it keeps bacteria from growing in the spray and it dries very quickly on fabric. Some recipes like this use water but water can harbor bacteria and it takes awhile to dry.
Everclear also works in place of vodka. I don’t recommend rubbing alcohol because it has more of an odor than vodka.
Feel free to experiment with other scents that you find relaxing and pleasant. Part of the fun of making things yourself is being able to make them how you want. Another one I enjoy for bedtime is the Now Peaceful Sleep blend.

Vodka…lol… I might just drink it 😉
Just kidding – great idea though 🙂
Lisa Sharp says
You could also use Everclear and save the vodka for other uses. ha

How funny! My bottle is sitting by the sink waiting to be refilled as soon as I get to the liquor store to buy vodka.
Lisa Sharp says
Well that’s good timing! ha

I made this once and loved it! I used the ‘misto’ bottle that is made for olive oil in the kitchen? Worked great!
Lisa Sharp says
Oh good idea! I loved this little blue bottle and it was a great price on Amazon Prime so had to have it! 🙂

I’ve found that some lavender essential oils actually don’t smell all that good. I think my kids would like a spray like this. I’ve heard witch hazel can be a good alternative to vodka. What do you think?
Lisa Sharp says
That should work. I don’t know of any reason it wouldn’t. I just always keep cheap vodka around for cleaning so it’s easy.

What a great idea. I never buy this kind of stuff because I cannot control the ingredients. Love that yours are so simple. Pinning.

Simple is the best. It takes like 2 minutes, maybe to make. My kind of DIY these days!

I’m not a fan of lavender either….any recommendations for a calming substitute?
Lisa Sharp says
Chamomile?

Hmm, I need some vodka. I have the lavender essential oil and a bottle, but I’ve been using water. I didn’t think about bacteria growing in it. My favorite scent is orange or lemon. I love how “fresh” it makes everything smell. 🙂
Lisa Sharp says
Yeah if you use it quickly it’s not a huge issue but vodka is also nice because it helps kill odors and dries so fast. It’s even safer for a lot of fabrics that water can leave marks on. I love citrus scents as well. Lime and bergamot is a favorite of mine.

Fantastic, super easy recipe! I think this would make a good, and far less chemical ridden take on Febreze to be used on some other household fabric items (like couches that could handle the alcohol), too. Thank you so much for sharing, dear gal!

It does work well as Febreze. It’s the same recipe I use just different scent. 🙂

Great recipe! I’m guessing you could do this with a variety of oils to use as air fresheners and avoid the chemical cocktails of commercial products.
I also love diffusing essential oils (lavender, cedarwood, vetiver) at bedtime or applying to the soles of the feet for a restful night’s sleep.
Lisa Sharp says
You can use it as an air freshener. I can’t do cedar as I’m allergic but I do love lavender. 🙂

I need to go get some vodka from a friend so I can make this! 😛 Such a simple + awesome idea!

Glad you like it! I keep cheap stuff around just for things like this.
