I recently shared a strawberry ice cream float recipe from the 1950s. And it is delicious but did you know you can also use the strawberry jello syrup to make a homemade soda?
When I shared on Threads that I had made a soda using jello people were very interested. Side note, be sure to follow me over on Threads.
It is a fun concept and really highlights how creative both homemakers got with packaged food. Some of the recipes came from marketing firms but many were from everyday homemakers. And this one was a homemaker’s recipe that Better Homes & Gardens tested and shared.
The soda syrup recipe is the same as the recipe used for the strawberry ice cream float recipe but making it is different. So let’s get into it!

How To Make A Homemade Strawberry Soda
This is a really quick recipe with just a couple of steps.
- Prepare the Carbonated Water: If you are making your own carbonated water be sure to do that first using the instructions with your machine.
- Make your Strawberry Jello Syrup: This uses different instructions than the Jello box so be sure to check the recipe card to make it.
- Add Strawberry Syrup: I will give a good starting point but you can do this to taste.
- Top with Carbonated Water: Now just top with carbonated water and stir gently.
- Enjoy: I like to serve this in an old-fashioned soda fountain glass for a real vintage feel.
Now let me give you a few tips and tricks to help you make your own homemade soda.
- Make it Sugar-Free: I haven’t tested this yet but the recipe should work with sugar-free jello.
- Making Carbonated Water: I make this at home using a SodaStream but I don’t recommend that brand now as they are a boycotted brand. You can find other similar soda makers.
- Carbonated Water Substitutes: You can also buy it or use club soda, seltzer water, or sparkling mineral water. However, keep in mind that these alternatives may have slight differences in taste and mineral content.
It would also be fun to top with whipped cream. You can get really creative with the recipe. Be sure to scroll down for the recipe card.
