Keeping our pets healthy is important and a good diet is key. Adding raw food to their diet can have many benefits but there are also risks. Learn how to safely feed raw food to your dog.

If you’ve been around here very long you likely have heard some about my Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd rescue, Patience. The vet estimates she is almost 12 years old. Pretty impressive for a large breed that was very ill when she was rescued.
One of the reasons I believe she is doing so well is a healthy diet. For years now we have fed her Wellness dog food. We also use a lot of their treats. She only eats natural, made in the US food and treats.
A current trend in pet food is raw food. While the idea of giving my dog fresh, raw food, like she would have eaten many years ago, the risks worry me. While they are pretty low, especially with high quality meat it’s still a concern. My dog also likes to snack throughout the day now that she is older and having raw meat sitting out all day is not a good idea.
Because of this I was really excited to hear about Wellness® CORE® RawRev™. Wellness CORE RawRev is a brand new dog food offering by Wellness that allows you to add raw food easily and safely to every meal. High-protein, grain free kibble is combined with 100% raw meat pieces to create a savory, nutrient-rich meal packed with everything your dog needs to thrive from the core.

- Smaller stools
Risks of Raw Food Diets for Dogs
Critics of raw food diets for dogs, included many veterinarians and the FDA, are worried about several possible risks.
- Bacteria in raw meat can pose a risk to human and dog health
- Unbalance diet that can risk the dog’s health overtime
- Potential for bones to cause choking, broken teeth, or internal punctures
- It’s not convenient to find to pets. It takes a lot of work to prepare the meals and can be difficult to take care of when traveling.
The Safe Raw Food Choice
Wellness CORE RawRev provides the convenience and safety of a packaged dog food and many of the benefits of a raw diet. The freeze-dried raw food pieces in the food help provide the raw benefits and give you the peace of mind that the food is safe.
My dog has always loved freeze-dried meat so this food is like getting treats with every meal. It’s also 100% grain free and many dogs don’t process grains well so this is very important.
It also supports whole-body health and longevity and has glucosamine and chondroitin for strong joints. Since I have a senior dog this is extra important to me.
I feel good feeding her this food and know it will continue to help support her health as she ages. I’ve had her for almost 10 years now and I’m so grateful for every moment I continue to get to spend with her.
I also have to share that when taking photos for this post with my dog she was very good and listened to instructions, even with a bag of food sitting in front of her. When we came in I gave her some of the food and she was so excited, she really loves it. I’m sure the raw pieces are her favorite because freeze dried meat is one of her favorite treats.

Your dog is too cute! I’ve heard good things about a raw food diet.
Lisa Sharp says
Thanks, she’s a sweetheart.

I’ve wondered about raw diets! My kitties are on a special rx diet so this would be a no-go for them. But my pooch might do well with a diet like this!
Lisa Sharp says
My dog loves this food. Pretty sure she thinks the freeze dried pieces are treats ha. I bet your dog would love it as well.

Pets are an extremely important part of our life and I can’t even begin to imagine our family’s lives without our loveable and floppy Basset Hounds, Fred and Lucy. They bring all of us so much joy and comfort, and I know we are fortunate to have them. Unfortunately, there are so many pets and animals who aren’t as fortunate as Fred and Lucy to be part of a loving family like ours.
Christina Kamp says
I wonder if they have anything like this for cats?
Lisa Sharp says
They don’t have the raw option for cats yet but the Core food is great and what I fed my dog before this one. They also I believe are working on a raw formula for cats.
