Freshen your home naturally with this orange air freshener with fall spice notes. It’s very easy to make and uses essential oils for the scent.
There are so many things in our homes that can cause odors. We don’t want those odors around, especially when guests come over. No one wants to be known as the one with the smelly house.
Unfortunately, this fact means we often go to homes that are overwhelmingly scented. If you have asthma or are sensitive to strong scents this is likely to end with a headache or even trouble breathing.
The Problem with Air Fresheners
Those artificial scents also can contain some scary chemicals. One thing in most conventional air fresheners is phthalates.
Phthalates are a group of chemicals that are used in air fresheners and many other products in part because they can help the fragrance last longer.
The problem with these chemicals is they are endocrine disruptors. Endocrine disruptors can cause everything from adverse reproductive, neurological developmental, and immune effects.
Phthalates can even cross the placenta and be passed to a baby during pregnancy if the mother is exposed. They are also transmitted through breast milk.
Natural Air Fresheners
There is a safer option if you want a fresh-smelling home. The first step is to of course eliminate sources of odor. Keeping your home clean can help keep odors away.
However, even a clean home can have lingering odors, and sometimes it’s nice to have a scent in our homes. For this essential oils are a great option. You can diffuse essential oils and you can also make your own natural air fresheners using essential oils. I like to do both.
Making your own natural air freshener is easy and allows you to know what you and your family are breathing. It’s fun to make these air fresheners and change up the scents depending on the season.

Instructions
- Fill your spray bottle with vodka.
- Add the essential oils.
- Shake well, spray and see if the spray seems strong enough. You can add more oils if you’d like. You can change up the ratio to fit your preference.
- Remember to shake before each use and store in a dark, cool place.
Notes
Be sure to use an amber or blue spray bottle. Essential oils are sensitive to light and using a dark glass bottle keeps them from deteriorating faster.
