An old-fashioned chocolate Coke is a delightful concoction that combines delicious chocolate syrup with the classic Coca-Cola, resulting in a refreshing and indulgent beverage. With its perfect balance of sweet and fizzy flavors, it offers a nostalgic taste experience that takes you back to the charming soda fountains of the past.

Old-fashioned soda fountains hold a special place in the hearts of many, as they were once vibrant gathering spots that offered refreshing and whimsical drinks. These charming establishments, popular from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century, were known for their fountain drinks, including one of my favorites the chocolate Coke.
The concept of soda fountains emerged during a time when carbonated beverages were gaining popularity as a refreshing treat. In the late 1800s, pharmacies, and apothecaries started offering carbonated drinks to customers, believing that the effervescent concoctions had health benefits. These establishments soon realized the potential for creating delightful drinks beyond medicinal purposes and began experimenting with flavors and combinations.

The soda fountain experience was a delightful affair. Patrons would take a seat at the counter and watch as the skilled soda jerk prepared their drinks. A variety of flavored syrups, soda water, and crushed ice were combined to create fizzy and flavorful concoctions. The drinks were often served in tall, frosty glasses with a straw, adding to the visual appeal and enjoyment.
Among the most popular creations at soda fountains was the chocolate Coke. This delightful beverage combined the classic taste of cola with the rich and indulgent flavor of chocolate syrup. The sweet and tangy notes of the cola blended harmoniously with the smooth and creamy chocolate, creating a unique taste sensation. The chocolate Coke became a favorite treat, especially among young patrons who relished its combination of familiar and indulgent flavors.

While the heyday of old-fashioned soda fountains may have passed, the charm and nostalgia associated with them continue to captivate our imagination. The memory of sipping on a chocolate Coke at the soda fountain remains a sweet reminder of simpler times and the joy of indulging in a delightful and refreshing treat.
Old-Fashioned Chocolate Coke at Home

Since it’s now very hard to find an old-fashioned soda fountain the next best thing is creating one at home. I love to make ice cream floats at home but another soda fountain favorite I love to make is a chocolate Coke.
This may sound strange to you if you’ve never had one but many people like vanilla or cherry Coke so why not chocolate? It really does go so well together and is a fun treat.
They are really simple to make as well. You only need a few simple ingredients:
- Coca-Cola
- Chocolate Syrup
- Optional: Whipped Cream and a Cherry
I like to make mine in an old-fashioned soda fountain style glass because it makes you feel like you are at an actual soda fountain. I also make my own homemade chocolate syrup. It’s really easy and is free of any high fructose corn syrup.
I also prefer Mexican Coca-Cola. It still has real sugar and the fun, retro glass bottle. It’s perfect for a vintage drink like this. You can often get them at Mexican restaurants or grocery stores with foreign food sections.
Now that you have the backstory and all the details on what you need it’s time to make this delicious drink!
