Finding your signature fragrance can be powerful. Scent is strongly connected to memory and having a signature fragrance can make you more memorable. To help you find your’s Coupons.com is sponsoring this post.

The perfume world can be overwhelming. There are so many terms and so many options. And no one perfume is going to be right for everyone.

Perfumes smell different on different people and of course, we all have our own preferences when it comes to scents. This just adds to the challenge of finding the perfect signature fragrance.

Before you even start trying different perfumes it’s a good idea to know a bit about them. It will help you get started and help you avoid wasting money on scents you actually don’t like.

Things You Need To Know About Perfume

The first thing you want to know is the difference between types of perfume, they are not all equal.

  • Eau de Fraiche- 1-3% concentration, lasts 1-2 hours.
  • Eau de Cologne- 2-4% concentration, lasts 2 hours.
  • Eau de Toilette- 5-15% concentration, lasts 3 hours.
  • Eau de Parfum- 15-20% concentration, lasts 4-6 hours.
  • Parfum- 30-40% concentration, lasts 8+ hours.

Types of fragrances are also a helpful thing to know. I’m terrible at describing these and that’s a whole post on its own. Check out this post by Byrdie about 7 types of perfumes to learn more.

It’s also good to know how different perfume notes work.

  • Top notes- Fresh and light, they also evaporate the fastest.
  • Middle notes- Warm and balancing, they take about 10-30 minutes to unfold.
  • Base notes- Deep, rich, and longest lasting.

Why You Should Consider Natural Fragrances

Ingredients don’t have to be disclosed in fragrances and sometimes there are possibly harmful ingredients like phthalates. Phthalates are endocrine disruptors and can cause a lot of different health problems.

Other ingredients have sometimes never even been tested for safety. Fragrance is known to cause allergies, skin and eye irritation, migraines, dizziness and more depending on how sensitive you are.

While it’s important to note you can still be allergic to natural fragrances you do lower other risks by choosing a natural option.

They are becoming more and more common. I recommend at least looking for a perfume that is free of phthalates. That is the ingredient I find the most troubling.

If you want to be extra safe look for a perfume that uses essential oils or at least natural fragrance oils. These are becoming more and more common. I even bought one at Target recently.

When You Should Buy Perfume

When trying to find your signature try the smallest size possible after you find one in the store that you think you will like. You don’t want to wear it for a few days and find it’s not your favorite after you buy a huge bottle.

Perfumes don’t go on sale often but the holiday sales on gift sets can be the best time to buy. These are most common in November but you will also find them after Christmas in December. Coupons.com has some great tips for getting the best deal on perfume in there post The 9 Best Things to Buy in November.
