Have a last-minute guest coming over? No time to do a good job cleaning your home? You can clean any room in 5 minutes with these tips.

We’ve all had a call that someone is coming over in just a few minutes. You get off the phone and look around and panic sets in.

In an ideal world, our home would always be ready for guests but things happen and we live in our homes. We also shouldn’t be as worried about it because all of us have messy homes from time to time but I think it’s easier to teach you how to clean fast than stop caring if people see your mess. I haven’t been able to learn that lesson yet.

Pile of dirty dishes in the kitchen

First, just shut the doors to as many rooms as you can. For me, the rooms I need to have ready when guests come over are the main bathroom, living room, and kitchen.

Now that you know what you need to clean start with the most embarrassing space and see what you can have time for.

The first thing you want to do before you even end up needing to do a quick clean is be sure to have cleaning supplies on hand. You don’t want to need to do this kind of cleaning only to find you’ve run out of supplies. You can get a free set of Mrs.Meyers cleaners from Grove Co., it’s a great way to stock up!

Want this list in a checklist form? Sign up below and get the list mailed to you. Keep it on the side of your fridge for a reminder of what to do when you find out someone is on the way to your house.

Grab a Laundry Basket

Once you have your laundry basket or another large basket, or even a box, throw everything that doesn’t belong in that room in the basket. Don’t worry about where things go right now.

Take the basket and put it in a room where guests usually don’t go. A closet or even a garage can be a good choice.

You’ll want to do this with any room you need to get picked up quickly. Remember this is emergency cleaning, not deep cleaning. You will want to deal with the baskets soon after your guests leave.

Note: If the room you are working with is the kitchen the method is a bit different due to dishes. Fill your dishwasher, do not rinse. If there are any left just fill your sink with hot soapy water and put them in that. It looks a lot better than just having dirty dishes out.

Do a Quick Wipe Down

Grab a microfiber duster or microfiber cloth and wipe down visible surfaces. You can use a nice smelling all-purpose spray on surfaces it’s safe for to make your house smell better as well.

While doing this go ahead and fold blankets and fluff pillows.

Make Your Home Smell Nice

Spray a bit of room spray around the room or start a diffuser. It’s also helpful to use a fabric refresher spray on sofa surfaces.  Other things you can do are put a few drops of essential oils in trash cans and put cleaner in your toilets and give them a quick scrub or drop a toilet bomb in them. If you have extra time run the vacuum over high traffic areas. You can throw some carpet freshener down as well.

If have more than just 5 minutes try the crisis cleaning method. It’s a method you can use even when you aren’t actually rushed but you need some motivation to get things done.

After Guests Leave

This is of course not a method of cleaning you should use often, only for emergencies. Don’t forget after the guest leaves to go back to your basket and put the items where they go.

This kind of cleaning emergency is why I try very hard to keep my living room, guest bathroom, and kitchen picked up and ready for guests. It’s not always the case but that is my goal.

A good spring clean can help prevent this problem as well. Even if it’s not springtime a good deep clean will get you back on track and make keeping things in good shape easier. Get a free printable spring cleaning checklist to help you get it all done.

And don’t forget to get a free set of Mrs.Meyers cleaners from Grove Co!

…Back when I was younger, and a teenager, my Grandmother called this ” Company Cleaning” if things were not up to par, or as they should be, lol. But it works, in a pinch !!
