One of my favorite green companies is GlassDharma, they make amazing glass straws. If you know me or have read my blog very long you likely know I LOVE my glass straws. I use them all the time and even carry one in my purse. While straws may not seem like a big issue, they are. More than 500 million disposable plastic straws are used in the United States every day! That’s a lot of plastic waste and straws are also a common source of litter.
In honor of Earth Day GlassDharma has been giving away glass straws and you still have the rest of today get your free straw, here is what you have to do. Write a quick 100-200 word essay or make a short 1-3 minute video about why you love glass straws, why you love the idea of reusable straws or why you’d love a glass straw. The first 1,000 entries will receive a free glass straw! And one grand prize winner for each category will win a $100 GlassDharma gift code! Be sure to visit GlassDharma’s website to learn more.
I haven’t had a chance to make a video so I’m going to share a great one from my friend Danielle from It Starts With Me.

I sent in an entry, but am doing it again, just in case. My facebook name is my maiden name (Emily Fisk), but we are one and the same – ha ha!
I think these glass straws are just the greatest idea! On earth day we can each make a collective huge difference by doing just one or two things differently. I started with cleaning products in my home, and systematically replaced everything that wasn’t organic with a cleaner that was. My house is still clean, and the planet less wrecked! Next I tackled the grocery store. It took a while to replace certain shopping habits (although, of course, the grocery bags went to cloth years ago) but little by little there is less waste, and even less recycling. If you begin with something that’s reusable, it makes shopping more efficient and easier. You also store less!
On earth day it’s easy to get excited about planting trees and grass, so let’s keep doing that. But let’s also make the small changes in our everyday lives that can impact our lives and the life of our planet in a big big way!
Keep up the good work, glassdharma!

Be sure you send it to GlassDharma, this is just a post about the contest. 🙂

The huge number of wasted straws was really brought to my attention on our recent trip to New Orleans. One of my goals is to make “no straw, please” a habit.

I keep finding them in my yard and since I don’t use them they aren’t coming from me. So frustrating.
