I have a Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd, named Patience, and live in Oklahoma. Our climate is not really what her breeds were bred for. She loves winter, especially snow but summer is not her favorite.

Growing up I had Golden Retrievers, they enjoyed swimming in our pond to cool off in the summer. My dog Patience however hates water. A kiddie pool would not be her idea of fun. She mostly stays cool by laying on the tile floor in the kitchen, often under the air vent.

Keeping Your Dog Healthy During the Summer

There are some important things to remember to help keep your dog healthy during the summer.

  • Have plenty of fresh cool water available at all times.
  • Feed your dog with good quality food. I recommend Wellness® CORE® RawRev™. It supports whole-body health and longevity. Glucosamine and Chondroitin for strong joints, very important for large dogs like mine.
  • Limit your dog’s time outside when it’s hot.
  • Never leave your dog in a car when it’s hot, even warm days a car can get hot very fast.
  • Check the temperature of sidewalks and roads before letting your dog walk on it. Roads can heat up very quickly and can injure the dog’s paws. Check with your hand or barefoot to see if the temperature is comfortable for you.
  • If you are going away and leaving your pet in the care of a pet sitter this summer, be sure to use my free pet sitter information printable.
  • Give your dog healthy dog-safe frozen treats, like the frozen yogurt treats below.

I live in Texas and can certainly understand about the dogs and heat! I have to admit that the first time my hubby fed my dog (that I had before we married) an ice cream cone I nearly dropped my teeth. I’d never seen a dog eat ice cream before – but she loved it! This is a super cute idea.

I’m in Oklahoma so I feel you. This is even better for dogs since it doesn’t have all the sugar but they seem to like it as much.

Aw these are so cute! I have a shiba. He is a mountain dog too and loves the winter. Not that he hates the summer, but he is a cold weather dog st heart. Ice cubes are his favorite treat. He loves anything cold so I bet he’d love these!

Yeah these mountain dogs just don’t like summer. My dog never has gotten into ice cubes which surprises me. She loves these though.

I’ve been looking at different dog treat recipes. I’ll have to check these out! My pup isn’t a fan of summer either. She’s a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, so with her longer coat she prefers the cooler weather. Winter is definitely her fave — she loves rolling around in the snow!

Aw, I love Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. It’s the only small breed I’ve ever really considered. My dog also love rolling in the snow and attacking snowmen ha.

Im totally going to make our pups some of these! And I added that super cute paw print ice cube tray to my Amazon cart!

It’s so important to keep our pups hydrated in these hot southern summers! This is an easy, quick idea!

Glad you like it and isn’t that mold so cute? I’m going to have to come up with more treats to make in it.
