Looking for a way to make your home smell great without toxic chemicals? This homemade air freshener in a fresh and clean scent will have your home smelling amazing with only natural ingredients.

I love a fresh smelling home but I don’t love artificially scented items. Many give me a headache or aggravate my asthma. Plus fragrance often contains phthalates which are an endocrine disruptor and that’s not something I want in my home.

Keeping your home clean is, of course, a good first step to keeping odors away but some odors linger even after you clean. It also can be nice to have some pleasant scent in your home.

Air fresheners are often what we reach for when we want to freshen up our home but not only can they contain phthalates they can contain a whole host of questionable chemicals.

For years now I’ve been creating my own air fresheners using essential oils. It’s simple and it’s fun to try new scent combinations. I like to change mine up seasonally.

The Benefit of Essential Oils

There have been studies to show that essential oils can improve your mood. While more studies need to be done to see why and which are best there is a promise and if used correctly essential oils are a safe choice.

I personally err on the side of caution when it comes to essential oils. I mostly use them in homemade cleaners and to diffuse. I rarely put them on my skin and only with a carrier oil. I also choose not to ingest them as my research has shown that carries risks.

How to Make Fresh and Clean Air Freshener

To make your air freshener you need a 4-ounce spray bottle, it’s best if it’s blue or amber. Essential oils are sensitive to light and using a dark glass bottle keeps them from deteriorating faster. You will also need vodka, lavender essential oil, lemon essential oil, and rosemary essential oil.

  1. Fill your 4-ounce spray bottle with vodka.
  2. Add 10 drops of rosemary essential oil.
  3. Add 15 drops of lemon and lavender essential oil.
  4. Shake well, spray and see if the spray seems strong enough. You can add more oils if you’d like.
  5. Remember to shake before each use and store in a dark, cool place.
