Is your carpet smelling less than fresh? Freshen your carpet and leave your whole house smelling great with this fall-scented diy carpet freshener.
Even if your home is meticulously clean, it’s not uncommon for it to have lingering odors that can dampen the overall freshness. One particular culprit is the carpet, which has a knack for trapping smells, especially in households with furry companions (be sure to read more about keeping your house clean with pets on the blog after this post). Unfortunately, many commercial carpet fresheners on the market contain a cocktail of harmful chemicals and synthetic fragrances that can pose risks to our well-being and our pets.
These synthetic fragrances have been linked to endocrine disruption, and it’s not something you want your family to come into contact with on a regular basis. Considering that we often lounge on the carpet and walk barefoot across it, these noxious chemicals can easily transfer to our skin, inadvertently exposing us to potential health hazards. But fret not, there’s a cost-effective and safe alternative: this DIY carpet refresher with essential oils.
By crafting your own carpet refresher, you not only eliminate the use of harmful ingredients but also gain the freedom to select your preferred scent. It’s a fantastic opportunity to switch things up seasonally and infuse your living space with an aroma that perfectly complements the time of year. Personally, during the autumn months, I find the combination of cinnamon, clove, and orange essential oils truly delightful. This warm and inviting blend fills the air as you vacuum, creating an ambiance that whispers of cozy fall days and festive celebrations.
Similar to conventional carpet fresheners, applying this homemade concoction is a breeze. Simply sprinkle it generously over the carpet, allowing it to settle for a while, and then proceed to vacuum it up. It’s an effortless yet effective method to ensure your carpets smell fresh and inviting, all without exposing your loved ones to potentially harmful chemicals. Embrace the soothing and inviting atmosphere while relishing the fact that your DIY carpet refresher is both highly efficient and environmentally friendly.
How to Make Fall-Scented DIY Carpet Freshener
Ingredients
- 2 cups of baking soda
- 10 drops cinnamon essential oil
- 20 drops orange essential oil
- 5 drops clove essential oil
- 1 glass jar with a metal lid with holes
- 1 metal with no holes
Note: Want to skip Amazon? You can get all of these essential oils from my favorite brand Plant Therapy.
Directions
- To add holes to your jar lid, carefully use a hammer and nail to poke holes. This step is optional, you can just sprinkle carefully without a lid.
- Pour the baking soda into your jar.
- Add essential oils and shake well.
- To use sprinkle over the carpet, allow to sit for at least 15 minutes, and vacuum normally.
When it comes to creating your own DIY carpet refresher, the possibilities are truly endless. In addition to the delightful scents provided by essential oils, you can enhance the formula further by incorporating a bay leaf. Not only does it leave a pleasant fragrance, but it also acts as a natural insect deterrent, giving you an added bonus. Feel free to adjust the amount of essential oils according to your personal preference for a customized experience.
If you happen to be out of cinnamon essential oil, don’t fret! Ground cinnamon works just as well. However, exercise caution when using it on light-colored carpets, as it may leave behind stains. It’s always wise to perform a spot test beforehand to ensure compatibility.
Exploring different scents for your DIY carpet freshener can be an exciting and enjoyable experience. Lavender, for instance, creates a tranquil ambiance, making it an excellent choice for bedrooms. During the holiday season, infusing your space with the invigorating aroma of peppermint adds a festive touch.
With a wide array of essential oils available, you have the freedom to curate scents that perfectly suit your preferences and cater to each room’s unique ambiance. Let your creativity soar as you experiment with various combinations and discover the endless possibilities that await.

I love the fall scents. Hadn’t thought about adding bay leaf to it though… Hmmm..

I started doing that when the neighbor’s house was empty for a long time and then the sprayed it. We saw one roach after and to prevent all of them coming over we found that they hate bay leaves. I liked the smell so kept it. 🙂 Plus a lot of bugs don’t like them so figure it can’t hurt.

Just mixed this up and it smells just amazing. Can’t wait to try it out on my rugs. I halved the recipe because I have no carpet in my home, just a couple of area rugs. I did not have any cinnamon EO, so I used about 1/2 tsp. of ground cinnamon instead. I have three dogs so hair and odors can take over sometimes, so I’m really looking forward to freshening up my rugs with this. Thanks for the post!

I love the idea of changing it up for the seasons, so much fun and all natural.

Glad you liked it.

Is it safe for pets?
Lisa Sharp says
It should be after vacuumed but you may want to double check the essential oils, especially with cats which are even more sensitive. You can switch the essential oils if any aren’t safe for your pet.

Can you use the ground spices of cinnamon and cloves instead of EO?
Lisa Sharp says
You can but I’d be very careful on light-colored carpet as it could stain.
