Want Facebook to show you more of the things you care about? You can create a better Facebook feed with just a few easy steps.

A few years ago my friend Bethany of the former blog The Glamorous Housewife shared some great information about making your Facebook feed more fun and enjoyable.

I wish I could still share her post but she has moved on to other things and her blog is gone until I can convince her to come back. I thought since I couldn’t share her post I’d share what I’m doing since she taught me her ways.

Facebook is one of those things that we can get so much good from but can also be a waste of time and even leave us feeling angry and upset.  With some changes to your settings, you can make it a better place again.

Creating a Better Facebook Feed

Start using the edit your friend list feature. You can set different friends to different settings to make sure you see who you want to see in your feed.

To get to the settings you can go to the friend’s profile you want to edit and click on the “friends” button and then on “edit friends list.”

Use the Acquaintaces Category

Take advantage of the “acquaintance” category. If you see people you don’t know well but you still want to keep up with them you can add them here.

What is the Facebook acquaintance category?

It helps tell Facebook that these friends are people you want to stay friends with and you’d like to know about big news but you don’t need to see every meme they post.

You’ll find out things with keywords Facebook deems important and posts that get a lot of interaction but you won’t have to see everything.

Unfollow People

Have some people that are posting things you don’t like but you still care about them and don’t want to defriend them? Maybe you need to be in the right mood to look at their stuff.

For these people using the “unfollow” option is great. You are still friends and can go look at their page when you want to check in but you won’t see them in your feed. You can undo this setting at any time.

To unfollow someone just go to the “friends” button on their page and click “unfollow.” They won’t know that you unfollowed them.

Add Close Friends

Now that we are seeing less of the things we don’t want to see we want to add more of the things we like.

There are also likely people you want to see more of. Close friends and family that you really want to stay caught up with. For these people use the “close friends” category. This will tell Facebook to share them more.

You will find this in the same place we’ve been using for the other options. Just click “friends” and “edit friends list” and then be sure to check “close friends.”

See Your Favorite Pages More Often

If you are like me you follow a lot of pages on Facebook, I hope you are following the Retro Housewife Goes Green Facebook page. When you follow a lot of pages you may miss out on the things you actually want to see.

Unfortunately, Facebook wants pages to pay them to be seen so a lot of what you are seeing is posts from people paying to be on your feed.

Facebook doesn’t show everyone that “likes” a page the posts but instead only shows a small percentage of people the posts. It’s a really small percentage if that post hasn’t already gotten a lot of interaction.

I don’t know about you but I don’t just want to see things a lot of other people like or someone paid to show me, I want to see more of the things the pages I care about are posting.

What I do is go through the pages I care about and categorize them as “Favorites.” This will tell Facebook you want to see this page more.

You can also set up notifications so that you will be notified if a page post content, videos, live videos, or anything else you may be interested in.

Now when I log into Facebook I see the pages I really care about pop up at the top of my feed. It makes my feed a better place full of more of what I love!

Here is how you can do it too:

  1. Go to a Facebook page that you love (like Retro Housewife Goes Green).
  2. Hover over the “Following” or “Like” button.
  3. Click the “Favorites” option.

Facebook Groups

What about groups? Are you seeing what you want from your favorite groups? You can also adjust those settings.

Just go to the group and click the “joined” button. You will see manage notifications. This is where you can choose when you are notified.

If you want to stop seeing the “everything” tags in groups you will need to edit the notifications on mobile. You will then use the same button and click on “posts” and turn batch mentions off.

If you are looking for groups to join I recommend joining my Homemaking for Everyone group! Be sure to leave at least the highlight notifications on so you won’t miss posts.

I also use the “everything” tag just once a month to highlight big things that have happened that month and share free and paid resources you can check out.

Now that you have edited your settings on Facebook you can go back to actually enjoying being on the site. I will see you over there on the Retro Housewife Goes Green Facebook page!

Sharing is caring!

It’s nice to know there is something we can do to tweak our feed. I have always wondered why I see EVERYTHING posted by an aquaintance, but miss all of my mom’s posts, and she misses mine. Thanks for the info!

Glad I could help! I wish Facebook just showed us what we wanted but at least there is a way to make it better.

Such good tips! And way better than my method of unfriending like 98% of the people I know, and unfollowing the rest.

Glad you liked it and yes that’s time-consuming and you may end up missing some of them. 🙂
