Interested in clothing rental? This is a complete guide to the clothing rental services available and how to best use clothing rental.

Spring woman clothes and accessories

Clothing rental is a fast-growing industry. It used to be something people did for special occasions but has grown to a service people use for everyday clothing as well.

The more we learn about the environmental impacts of the clothing industry the more people become interested in buying less clothing.

People still want to be able to have new clothes often so renting clothes is a great solution. It also means less clutter in your clothes and getting to try new styles without commitment.

The Basics

Each service is a little different but the basic idea is that you rent different clothing items and accessories instead of buying them. You can generally wear the items as long as you’d like and then just send them back when you want more.

You can also keep the items if you love them, usually at a discounted rate. Sometimes you get an even bigger discount if you buy the whole pack.

You don’t need to wash anything before you send it back and shipping is free. Some of the services you pick the items you want and some times a stylist picks the clothes for you. Generally, you fill out a style survey to help get the best clothes for you.

These are the current clothing rental services I’m aware of, their plans, costs, and any coupons or discounts I was able to find.

I am fascinated by this idea of renting clothing. When I think of the money I have spent on clothes that I wear only a few times, I realize how wasteful I have been. So far, I have tried Infinite Style and Rent the Runway (I need professional clothing).

Both are fun, but so far, the turnaround time for Infinite Style is much more impressive. I signed up on May 20, 2019, and have already received 4 shipments for a total of 12 items- and my next box is on the way! I have worn 9 of the 12 items (the other 3 were too big).

In comparison, I signed up for Rent the Runway on May 28 and have received 2 shipments for a total of 8 potential items. Of those items, I have worn 2 (the other items did not fit or I just did not like).

I will continue this trial to see how the 2 compare by the endof for 2 months. So far, Infinite Style is the clear winner for me. I wish they would consider adding accessories.

I’ve had a le tote membership for a while now, and those prices are for unlimited box swaps, not just one per month. FYI.

I hadn’t seen they had brought back unlimited swaps. I’ll have to go check the updated membership levels. I’m still grandfathered in on an old plan.

A lot of the clothes are dry cleaned or washed with fragrance, for instance, I tried Le Tote and was allergic to whatever cleaning technique they use. I couldn’t get them to tell me what cleaners they used. Do you know of any clothing subscriptions that use green, fragrance-free cleaning methods?

All that I have tried smell pretty similar to me honestly. I’m guessing most are using similar cleaning methods. If you do contact others about their methods and hear back I’d be interested to know what they say.
