Old-Fashioned Chocolate Soda Recipe

Old-fashioned chocolate sodas are a soda shop classic that has been lost to time. You can learn how to recreate one at home with a delicious blend of chocolate syrup, fizzy soda, and ice cream.

I’ve said it before and I will keep saying it, I’m so sad that soda fountains are so rare now. I don’t want these modern soda shops with syrups and just normal sodas, I want a retro style one with ice cream floats and fun creations.

Until I get that wish I have been enjoying making old-fashioned soda shop drinks at home. And this chocolate soda is one of my favorites.

I used to get one of these at a nearby retro style cafe owned by the Chickasaw Nation. The Chickasaw Nation also owns a chocolate factory and they made a chocolate soda you could get turned into a float. Sadly they disconnected the soda but at least I can make one at home and now you can as well.

How to Make Chocolate Soda

What we will really be making is a chocolate soda float but many people simply call them chocolate sodas since we don’t really see a lot of chocolate soda anymore.

Ingredients you will need:

• Carbonated Water
• Chocolate Syrup
• Heavy Cream
• Vanilla Ice Cream

I like to make my own chocolate syrup because it has simple ingredients, is cheaper, and it’s really easy to make. You can find my recipe for chocolate syrup here on the blog.

Once you have your ingredients you will need some supplies to make this drink as well. 

Supplies you will need:

• Tall Glass (I like old-fashioned soda fountain glasses)
• Soda Maker (alternatives shared below)
• Long Spoon

That’s all! Now you are ready to make your chocolate sodas. I do have some more tips for you in case you need them.

How to Make Carbonated Water

You can buy carbonated water but it’s also very easy to make at home. I make mine at home using a SodaStream that I’ve had for many years. However, I don’t recommend that brand now as they are a boycotted brand. You can find other similar soda makers. 

With a soda maker you can make drinks like this chocolate soda, the carbonated limeade I shared previously, and so many other old-fashioned drinks. They are also great for making your own sparkling waters at home.

You will want to follow the directions with your soda maker but generally, you fill a bottle with filtered water, attach it to the machine and push a button until it lets you know that it’s done. You can adjust how carbonated the water is which is a really nice feature. I like to make it well-carbonated for this chocolate soda recipe since you will be stirring it which will cause it to lose some carbonation. 

Substitutions for Carbonated Water

If you don’t have a soda maker, there are a few alternatives you can consider. Club soda, seltzer water, or sparkling mineral water can often be used as substitutes.

However, keep in mind that these alternatives may have slight differences in taste and mineral content.
