Step into a bygone era with this delightful chocolate soda recipe, as we continue our journey through the charm of old-fashioned soda shops.
While reminiscing about the past, it’s disheartening to realize that the allure of chocolate sodas has faded over time. In today’s modern world, we sometimes will encounter ice cream floats, but the classic combination of rich chocolate syrup and effervescent soda seems to have been left behind.
Let’s bring back this nostalgic beverage and rediscover the joy it once brought. Join me in reviving the tradition of indulging in a luscious chocolate soda, because some treasures from the past deserve to be cherished and enjoyed in the present.
How to Make Chocolate Soda

What we will really be making is a chocolate soda float but many people simply call them chocolate sodas since we don’t really see a lot of chocolate soda anymore. A cafe not far from me used to have a chocolate soda but it has since been discounted. I feel like not enough people knew it was delicious and that they should try it, especially with ice cream!
Thankfully it’s easy to make a chocolate soda at home and the addition of ice cream like in this recipe makes it even better. You can keep scrolling to find the full recipe and a printable version.
Ingredients you will need:
- Carbonated Water
- Chocolate Syrup
- Heavy Cream
- Vanilla Ice Cream
I like to make my own chocolate syrup because then it’s free of high fructose corn syrup, cheaper than organic versions, and it’s really easy to make. You can find my recipe for chocolate syrup here on the blog.

Once you have your ingredients you will need some supplies to make this drink as well.
Supplies you will need:
- Tall Glass (I like old-fashioned soda fountain glasses)
- SodaStream (alternatives shared below)
- Long Spoon
That’s all! Now you are ready to make your chocolate sodas. I do have some more tips for you in case you need them.
What is Carbonated Water?
Carbonated water, also known as sparkling water or soda water, is water that has been infused with carbon dioxide gas under pressure. This process creates bubbles and gives the water a fizzy texture and refreshing taste. It is commonly enjoyed on its own or used as a mixer in various beverages.

How to Make Carbonated Water
You can buy carbonated water but it’s also very easy to make at home. I make mine at home using a SodaStream. I’ve had mine for well over a decade and it still works perfectly. It’s a really great investment if you want to make soda and other fun drinks at home.
With the SodaStream you can make drinks like this chocolate soda, the carbonated limeade I shared previously, and so many other old-fashioned drinks. You can also use their soda syrups to make your own sodas at home. They are also great for making your own sparkling waters at home.
You will want to follow the directions with your SodaStream but generally, you fill a bottle with filtered water, attach it to the SodaStream and push a button until it lets you know that it’s done. You can adjust how carbonated the water is which is a really nice feature. I like to make it well-carbonated for this chocolate soda recipe since you will be stirring it which will cause it to lose some carbonation.

Substitutions for Carbonated Water
If you don’t have a SodaStream or another way to carbonate water at home, there are a few alternatives you can consider. Club soda, seltzer water, or sparkling mineral water can often be used as substitutes, as they share similar effervescence and can provide a similar fizzy texture to your beverages or recipes.
However, keep in mind that these alternatives may have slight differences in taste and mineral content, so it’s a good idea to taste and adjust accordingly to match your desired outcome.
