Get ready to dive into a treasure trove of practical tips and some vintage inspiration. I’ll also be including some great back-to-school products from Minted to help along the way. And don’t miss the downloadable, printable checklist. Let’s make this back-to-school season the best one yet!

We will review all the tasks that need to be done before the kids head back to school. Because around here we love to include touches of a vintage life in our everyday lives, there will also be some vintage tips for you to try this year.

Planning Ahead

If you have been around here very long, you likely know I’m all about planning. That’s why you will find a lot of planners on this site. If I don’t plan, it doesn’t happen!

When it comes to back-to-school planning, there are a few things you want to be sure get done.

Setting Up a Family Calendar

Get this family calendar from Minted.

Creating a family calendar is important to make sure everyone knows what is going on throughout the year. As you get information about important school dates, you will want to be sure to add them.

You can create a beautiful custom family calendar with Minted. They have lots of customizing options so you can make sure the calendar will work well for your family.

Organizing School Supplies

Check with your school to see what school supplies your kids will need and make a list of what you need to purchase, and gather what you already have on hand.

Some items that are commonly needed:

  • Pencils (mechanical or regular)
  • Pens (blue, black, and red)
  • Erasers
  • Highlighters
  • Notebook (spiral or composition)
  • Loose-leaf Paper
  • Folders (with pockets)
  • Binders
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Colored Pencils or Crayons
  • Markers
  • Calculator
  • Protractor
  • Compass
  • Index Cards
  • Sticky Notes
  • Backpack
  • Lunchbox
  • Water Bottle
  • Personal Organizer or Planner
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Tissues

Be sure to adjust your list for your child and their grade level. You may also want to pick up some labels. Parents have been adding labels to their kids’ supplies for generations, but now we have even better options to use, like the personalized labels from Minted.

Creating a dedicated homework area at home can significantly enhance productivity and focus. Here’s how to set up an ideal homework station:

  • Designate a specific area in your home as a homework zone.
  • Ensure it’s a quiet, well-lit space with minimal distractions to help your child concentrate.
  • To make the area more fun, be sure to add some of Minted’s artwork.

My friend Katie has even more great back-to-school organization tips to help you get ready.

Meal Planning and Preparation

Getting a meal planning system ready to go for the new school year will help cut out a lot of stress. One way to do this is by getting my meal planner and having it set up and ready to go.

Write down some go-to lunch and after-school snack ideas, and make sure to have supplies for those items ready to go. You can get some inspiration here-

  • Back-to-School Lunch Ideas from the 1950s
  • Easy School Lunch Ideas

Making sure to also have some easy dinner ideas on hand is always a good plan as well. You can get inspiration for those from my quick dinner idea list.
