Review + Giveaway: Lunapads

Lunapads are a wonderful alternative to conventional pads. They are made from very soft cotton so they are more comfortable and aren’t noisy like many pads. Plus they are free of all of those nasty chemicals! Women will use on average 15,000 pads or tampons in their lifetime, so it saves a lot of trash.

I have used Lunapads for awhile and they are easy to use, easy to clean and very comfortable. And I wasn’t a pad user before Lunapads, I hated pads but these are great. And many people worry about cleaning but just rinse out when you are done with one and put it in a wet bag (which Lunapads sells) and toss them in your laundry when you do a load. You can also sun bleach them if they get stained (to sun bleach just line dry them).

If you prefer tampons you may want to try the DivaCup, which Lunapads also carries. It’s a reusable menstrual cup that has become very popular. It’s made from silicone and is latex-free, plastic-free and BPA-free. It comes in two sizes and is very easy to use.

If you are still scared to try Lunapads you can get a free sample pantyliner, you just cover the cost of shipping. So you don’t have to worry about buying a bunch and have them not be for you, though I doubt that would happen.

Lunapads also does something pretty amazing, they help provide access to feminine hygiene products to girls and women in developing countries! Their program is called Pads4Girls. It helps address a serious and often overlooked problem. Women often miss school or work for several days every month because they can’t adequate manage their periods. By providing sustainable menstrual supplies you can change the lives of women!

So are you ready to give Lunapads a try? Lunapads is offering one lucky reader a $50 gift certificate, so what better time to try them out? If you don’t win why not send for one of the free pantyliners? Follow the instructions below to enter!

Menstrual Products, How Do They Affect You and the Environment?

*Disclaimer: Guys you may want to skip this post*

We all know that disposable products are bad for the environment but have you thought about the environmental impact of your menstrual products? And what about their impact on you?

Women will use on average 15,000 pads or tampons in their lifetime. That’s a lot of trash! And a lot of money. And a lot of that trash is plastic as few menstrual products use much in the way of natural fibers anymore.

And what about the impact on you? The pads and tampons are often bleached with chlorine bleach which releases dioxin, which is a pollutant and possible carcinogen. If it uses cotton it will likely contain pesticides, which can be harmful to you and the environment. Many tampons also leave little fibers in you and they can cause TSS.

“TSS is real, it’s common, and it kills. 1 in 700 women will get tampon related TSS in their lifetime. It’s estimated that nationwide 5,000 to 10,000 cases of staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome now occur each year, making it as common as Lyme disease. TSS can strike any woman or girl without warning and can act so rapidly that more fatalities among tampon users are inevitable.”

NatraCare shares some very good info on tampons.

There are so many reasons to choose greener menstrual products. Friday I will share great alternatives, there are a lot of options out there and you are sure to find one that will work for you! Also I will be giveaway lots of these great products to help get you started, so be sure to check back all weekend!

Reusable Menstrual Products & TSS + Giveaway

In case the title isn’t enough warning, guys you may want to skip this post.

“Last summer (2010) Amy Rae Elifritz went from being a healthy and happy 20 year old with her whole life ahead to losing her life in a matter of days  . . .  sadly, this could have been prevented.

Did you know that tampon related Toxic Shock Syndrome is real, relatively common, and can be deadly?  Last summer when Amy experienced flu-like symptoms the fact that she was menstruating seemed unimportant.  A few days later, on June 13, she died from Toxic Shock”

Amy’s mom, Lisa Elifritz, founded You ARE Loved to raise awareness about the link between tampons and TSS. Women let’s be honest, how many of you have ignored or forgotten to change your tampons every 4-8 hours?  At the end of your period it can be easy to leave your tampon in a little to long, we are busy after all. But that could lead to a very dangerous, even deadly illness.

Pretty scary isn’t it? Thankfully there are many simple ways to reduce your risks.

  • Use the lowest absorbency you need at the stage of your period.
  • Alternate tampons with pads.
  • Use pads at the end of your period (the time we seem to “forget” to change our tampons the most).
  • Wash your hands before and after handling the tampon and touch it as little as possible.
  • Use tampons made of organic cotton (thought to be safer).
  • Use only pads.
  • Never use internal menstrual products if you have ever had TSS.

And another tip is to use reusable menstrual products. If you haven’t heard of reusable menstrual products they aren’t as gross as they sound. They are simple to use and great for the environment and your body.

One option is the DivaCup which is an internal menstrual product and while you should use the same precautions with it as you do with tampons they have not been linked with TSS.

Most women that have tried DivaCups swear by them but they aren’t for everyone, I will admit I haven’t tried one. If they aren’t for you another option is LunaPads, LunaPads are reusable pads. They are soft, more comfortable than disposable pads, and great for the environment. There are several sizes and styles to choose from just like their disposable cousin.

Even if you are doing all of the things to reduce your risks of TSS it’s good to know the symptoms (the person may have all or some of the symptoms)

  • Symptoms start suddenly
  • High fever (at least 102′F)
  • A rapid drop in blood pressure
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle aches
  • Vomiting
  • Sunburn-like rash, anywhere on the body.
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Unusual redness under eyelids or inside of mouth.
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Thirst
  • Mental changes
  • Decreased urination

Be sure all the women in your life know the risks and the symptoms of TSS.
