We have very hard water where I live. Anything water touches are going to end up with hard water build-up. It’s a constant battle to keep things looking clean and shiny around here.
One of the things that seem to always be covered in hard water is the shower and I hate cleaning showers. The best way I’ve found to keep my shower looking clean is by using a daily shower spray. I still need to give it a good scrubbing but not nearly as often.
The Problem with Daily Shower Cleaner
The problem with these daily shower cleaners thought is the ingredients. Before I started using natural products I used one of the conventional ones. You’d have to hold your breath while you sprayed it and get out of the room as fast as possible. It always left me wondering what it was doing to my body, especially my lungs.
I looked up the ingredients in one of the popular shower sprays, one that I used in the past, and it’s pretty scary. One of the ingredients, tetrapotassium EDTA is suspected of causing skin or sense organ toxicity. The ingredient n-alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chlorides are restricted for use in cosmetics in Canada and Japan.
It’s also suspected of causing immunotoxicity, respiratory toxicity, skin or sense organ toxicity, and asthma. Plus it contains fragrance which often contains phthalates which are endocrine disrupters. I don’t know about you but that’s not something I want to be exposed to every single day.
Several years ago, after I had been removing some of the more possibly harmful products from my life, I started making my own daily shower cleaner. It’s very easy to make and you don’t have to worry about what you are breathing. It also works well.
Another issue we have around here is mold and the tea tree oil in this spray helps keep that under control as well. Keeping mold under control is very important for everyone but especially those with asthma and allergies and we have both in our house.
Daily Shower Cleaner
Keep your shower clean without scrubbing with this daily shower cleaner.
Materials
- 1/3 cup vodka or Everclear
- 3 1/2 cups distilled water
- 20 drops of tea tree oil
Instructions
- Mix all of your ingredients.
- Pour the mixture into a glass spray bottle. It’s best to use a blue or brown bottle to protect the essential oils. It also helps to mix the ingredients in a large glass measuring cup helps make it easier to pour into your bottle.
- To Use: Give a quick shake and spray in the shower after each use. You want to do it while the shower is wet because the water helps the spray work.
Notes
You can also add lavender essential oil to the spray to help tone down the tea tree oil scent if you don’t like it. I’ve also added peppermint essential oil before. It’s really up to you and your preferences.

I would also add some oregano essential oil. It’s one of the best oils as it’s antiviral, antifungal, and anti-bacterial. It’s a real powerhouse oil. Thanks for the recipe Lisa. I’m adding this to my green cleaning recipe binder.

@YourOrganicLife That’s a good idea! There are a lot of great essential oils you can add to this. It’s a good starting point. Mold is my main issue so the tea tree oil is great for that.
Joanna says
I really like the idea of the oregano oil, I’ve heard really good things about disinfecting with it.
CherieG says
I love this idea! I’ve got to try it!
MelissaJonesEllis says
Does it need shaken up each time you use it? If not, I could put it in my automatic shower cleaner… The liquid it came with has way too strong a smell.
retrohousewife5 says
@MelissaJonesEllis Yeah with the essential oils it really does need to be shaken up.

This is a fantastic idea! As noted, almost any essential oil can be added depending on the issue. Citrus oils would also leave a nice scent – lemon, lime, orange or grapefruit. To keep essential oils mixed with water, mix them in a glass measuring cup with a small spoonful of epsom salt. Once the salt and oils are combined, add the liquids per the recipe and mix until the salt desolves. The salt will help emulsify the oils so they won’t separate from the water and vodka.

Great idea!

Does the cleaner have to be in a glass bottle? Why not plastic?
Lisa Sharp says
It doesn’t have to be but it’s best it’s not clear because it’s better for the essential oils. I prefer glass because it’s more eco-friendly and lasts longer.
Raquel says
Can rubbing alcohol be used as a substitute for the vodka?
Lisa Sharp says
Yes, but I prefer vodka or grain alcohol because it’s more natural and has less of a smell.
Maddy says
My nozzles on my glass bottles I purchased to use with essential oils don’t last long before they won’t spray anymore is it the spray nozzle quality or something I am doing wrong.
Lisa Sharp says
I’m not sure, I haven’t had an issue with the glass bottles I’ve gotten from Amazon. Sometimes you can get replacement spray nozzles though.
Kendra says
How do you know the proportion of liquid (water) to EO that will make it effective for disinfecting??
Thanks in advance! I’m trying real hard to go eco-friendly and use non-harmful products
Lisa Sharp says
All of the amounts are listed above. 🙂 The vodka also helps disinfect.
Vanessa says
Is this safe on porcelain tile? We have a shower/tub combo with porcelain tile from the tub to the ceiling.
Lisa Sharp says
It should work just fine. It’s best to always test a new product in a small area just to double check but I don’t know of any reason it wouldn’t work.
Debbie says
Do you spray the walls and leave it, or do you spray, wait a few minutes and rinse off. I don’t use a shower spray now because I hate all the chemicals. This looks great.
Thanks!
Lisa Sharp says
Spray and walk away, no rinsing or scrubbing required.
