Looking for a Christmas tradition just for you and your partner? There are some great ways to start your own Christmas couple traditions that you will enjoy year after year.
Many Christmas traditions seem to revolve around kids but it’s nice to have traditions if you don’t have children, or even if you do it’s nice to have some that you just share with your spouse.
Christmas traditions are a great way for spouses to connect. However, with all of the busyness of the holidays, you can easily forget to spend much time as just a couple. And it’s a great way to create memories together.
What Are Christmas Traditions?
We often think of Christmas traditions as common traditions like stockings by the fireplace, a Christmas dinner with family, and other traditional things like that.
But really Christmas traditions can be anything you want! My husband and I like to put up our tree together while watching Harry Potter. It sounds like a strange tradition but we put up our tree right after Halloween so it’s perfect. Some years I have even made butterbeer or another Harry Potter-themed treat.
We also have more traditional traditions like looking at Christmas lights on Christmas Eve together. We’ve done that since we were dating and it’s one of my favorite traditions. One year we had a lot of snow and ice but we still went out very slowly and carefully so we didn’t have to miss this tradition.
If you aren’t sure what Christmas traditions you want to start this list can help you come up with some new ideas. It’s also fun to let them happen organically by just planning lots of fun things to do throughout the holiday season and see which things you want to repeat year after year.
Christmas Traditions For Couples
Give Your Partner Christmas Date Night Cards
At the start of the season give your partner date night cards that can be used all season long. You can make your own or download free printable ones, there are blank options as well.
Put up the Christmas tree together
Put on some holiday music or a movie and put up your tree. You could also have a special treat or dinner that night. Make it a special time together.
You could also give each other a new ornament. Try to think of something that represents that year or their interests.
Go out looking at Christmas lights
Turn on some Christmas music and drive around a few neighborhoods, a park, or another area with nice displays. It’s also fun to fill some insulated mugs with hot cocoa to drink while you drive around.
You could also do a little Christmas light scavenger hunt. It’s a great way to make your trip even more fun. My husband and I have done this with another couple and had the best time.
Give each other stockings
Stockings are a lot of fun and can easily be budget-friendly. You can even have a theme like sexy stockings, childhood memories, or even set a small budget to see what you can each come up with.
The main thing is to get creative. Putting together the stockings should be just as much fun as opening them.
Share an advent calendar
You can use the more traditional chocolate advent calendar, fill one with dates, romantic coupons, or even a mixture of all of these things.
Buy each other ornaments
Even if you don’t put up the Christmas tree together you can still buy each other ornaments. Pick one that makes you think of your spouse, or maybe one that represents something you did that year.
It’s fun to look back at all of the ones you got from each other over the years. We love to go check out Hallmark ornaments. We even have a Christmas tree in our bedroom filled with an ornament for each year we’ve been together.
Make gingerbread cookies together
Decorating gingerbread cookies can be a lot of fun, plus you get a tasty treat. There is no reason this has to be a kids’ activity. You could even take some of the cookies to an elderly family member or give some to your neighbors.
You could also make this a contest and text your friends and have them pick the winner.
Make a Christmas bucket list
Come up with all of the things you want to do together during the holiday season. You can use the holiday bucket list printable that comes with my Christmas planner and hang it on the fridge and try to mark off as many of the activities as possible. You could even add some really crazy bucket list ideas.
Camp out in the living room with the Christmas tree all lit up
There is something magical about a Christmas tree all lit up at night. Make a pallet on the floor and camp out like you did when you were kids. If you really prefer to sleep in your bed, just stay there for a movie and some popcorn.
Read a book together
Take turns reading a holiday story you both enjoy. There are lots of fun Hallmark Christmas books if you want something longer that you can read on several nights during the holiday season.
If neither of you wants to read aloud listen to audiobooks together. You can get a free book from Audible and listen to it throughout the season.
Open your gifts to each other on Christmas Eve
Make this time something special for just you and your partner. If you have kids set them up with some snacks and a Christmas movie so you can spend time alone.
Opening your gifts alone will help you enjoy them more and not let the busyness of things overshadow the gifts.
Sing Christmas carols
Get a few other couples to go with you and sing carols. Nursing homes are a great place to do this as they always want to see more visitors around the holidays.
You could also make this less serious and find some Youtube Christmas karaoke and be a bit more silly about it.
Make your own Christmas candy
Candy is always a fun part of the holidays so finding some easy candies to make yourself can be a lot of fun. There are easy options like Oreo truffles or you could even get a candy kit and be a bit fancier.
And most of all remember to make time for each other. You likely have a lot of family and friend activities but alone time is also important. Traditions also don’t have to be serious, many of the best are kind of silly.
