A few years ago I had a sweet rescued Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix named, Patience. We live in Oklahoma, a state with a climate that was n0t ideally suited to her breed. Patience adored the winter, particularly the snow, something we don’t get much in Oklahoma. However, the summer months were a challenge for her.
As a child, I had Golden Retrievers who loved to swim in the pond to cool off during the summer months. But Patience was different. She despised water, and a kiddie pool was not something she would have enjoyed. Instead, she spent most of her time lying on the cool tile floor in the kitchen, often positioned under the air vent.
Despite Patience’s dislike of the summer heat, we always found ways to keep her cool and comfortable. Whether it was through extra air conditioning or a special treat like these homemade frozen yogurt dog treats, we always made sure she was happy and healthy. That’s just what pet owners do – we love and care for our furry friends, no matter what.
There are many things to keep in mind when it comes to keeping your dog healthy and happy during the hot summer months. These are some helpful tips to make sure you can do just that.
Keeping Your Dog Healthy During the Summer
While using these tips do make sure you also know the signs of heat stroke in dogs and always have an emergency number for a vet in an easy-to-find place. Once you have those things covered, try these tips.
- Have plenty of fresh cool water available at all times.
- Feed your dog good quality food. I recommend Wellness® CORE® RawRev™. It supports whole-body health and longevity. Glucosamine and Chondroitin for strong joints are very important for large dogs like the dogs I’ve had.
- Limit your dog’s time outside when it’s hot.
- Never leave your dog in a car when it’s hot, even on warm days, a car can get hot very fast.
- Check the temperature of sidewalks and roads before letting your dog walk on them. Roads can heat up very quickly and can injure the dog’s paws. Check with your hand or barefoot to see if the temperature is comfortable for you.
- If you are going away and leaving your pet in the care of a pet sitter this summer, be sure to use my free pet sitter information printable.
- Give your dog healthy dog-safe frozen treats, like the homemade frozen dog treats below.

She lived to be 14 years old before passing away. This was amazing since she is a large breed and is a rescue that was near death when we got her when she was only 2 years old. I believe feeding her high-quality food like the foods from Wellness® helped keep her healthy for so long.

I live in Texas and can certainly understand about the dogs and heat! I have to admit that the first time my hubby fed my dog (that I had before we married) an ice cream cone I nearly dropped my teeth. I’d never seen a dog eat ice cream before – but she loved it! This is a super cute idea.
Lisa Sharp says
I’m in Oklahoma so I feel you. This is even better for dogs since it doesn’t have all the sugar but they seem to like it as much.

My dog would love these! I love that you made them paw shaped, that’s so much fun.
Lisa Sharp says
Aren’t they cute? I love silicone molds.

Aw these are so cute! I have a shiba. He is a mountain dog too and loves the winter. Not that he hates the summer, but he is a cold weather dog st heart. Ice cubes are his favorite treat. He loves anything cold so I bet he’d love these!
Lisa Sharp says
Yeah these mountain dogs just don’t like summer. My dog never has gotten into ice cubes which surprises me. She loves these though.

I’ve been looking at different dog treat recipes. I’ll have to check these out! My pup isn’t a fan of summer either. She’s a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, so with her longer coat she prefers the cooler weather. Winter is definitely her fave — she loves rolling around in the snow!
Lisa Sharp says
Aw, I love Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. It’s the only small breed I’ve ever really considered. My dog also love rolling in the snow and attacking snowmen ha.

Im totally going to make our pups some of these! And I added that super cute paw print ice cube tray to my Amazon cart!
It’s so important to keep our pups hydrated in these hot southern summers! This is an easy, quick idea!
