No one wants a smelly house but conventional air fresheners come with nasty chemicals you don’t want in your home. Making your own air freshener is a great alternative. If you want something fresh and uplifting this citrus fresh air freshener is perfect!

Most homemakers have likely had the fear that their home smelled when guests came over. We get used to odors in our homes sometimes but our guests aren’t used to them and may smell them right away. You don’t want to be known as the smelly house!

I also have noticed some people use scented items, likely due to this fear, to an extreme. This can lead to headaches for your guests, especially those sensitive to scents. If you guest has asthma, like I do, it can even sometimes trigger an attack.

A happy medium is key but how do you find it?

Keeping Your Home Smelling Fresh, Naturally

The best way to keep our homes smelling fresh is by keeping them clean. Finding the source of the odors and dealing with it will do the most good. Even the cleanest home is likely to still have some odors though. And even if our homes don’t smell bad it’s often nice to add a pleasant scent.

You can kill two birds with one stone by creating your own air freshener that contains a deodorizing ingredient. Vodka is a natural deodorizer and disinfectant. It’s a perfect base for an air freshener.

Creating your own air freshener also prevents all the nasty chemicals that are found in conventional air fresheners, like phthalates which are endocrine disrupters and can have some bad side effects.

How to Make Citrus Fresh Air Freshener

To make your air freshener you need a 4 ounce spray bottle, it’s best if it’s blue or amber. Essential oils are sensitive to light and using a dark glass bottle keeps them from deteriorating faster. You will also need vodka, bergamot essential oil, and lime essential oil.

  1. Fill your 4 ounce spray bottle with vodka.
  2. Add 10 drops of bergamot essential oil.
  3. Add 15 drops of lime essential oil.
  4. Shake well, spray and see if the spray seems strong enough. You can add more oils if you’d like.
  5. Remember to shake before each use and store in a dark, cool place.

Benefits of Bergamot & Lime Essential Oils

While you likely are very familiar with lime you may not be as familiar with bergamot. Bergamot is a citrus fruit. If you have ever had earl grey tea this oil will smell familiar as bergamot is what gives earl grey it’s flavor. It is a popular scent in a lot of perfumes, soaps, and lotions.

Both scents are believed to be uplifting. Citrus scents in general are often used as mood boosters by users of essential oils. They are also very fresh and summery scents. They do a great job of making your home smell fresh and clean.
