I love dairy products. Ice cream, chocolate milk, hot chocolate, pudding, cheese, I could go on and on. However, it doesn’t like me very much. I’m okay if I’m careful but sometimes that’s not the easiest. I mean really, how do you leave ice cream behind?
While I’ve never been a fan of regular milk, I do love chocolate milk. Sometimes I like to live a bit dangerously and drink it. The problem is the store bought stuff is almost always low fat milk, which I’m not a fan of, and the ingredients leave a lot to be desired. Chocolate syrup is another good option in theory but it also has questionable at best ingredients.
Thankfully a few years ago I figured out how to make my own! And guess what, it’s super easy. I will never go back to store bought. It’s perfect for chocolate milk, ice cream sundaes, anything you’d normally put chocolate syrup on.
Funny story, my mom didn’t allow much in the way of sweets at home. We did always have Cheerios and on occasion there was chocolate syrup in the house. A number of times I took Cheerios and secretly put chocolate syrup on them. My very own chocolate cereal! Haven’t had it in years but I loved it as a kid. Of course I also was known to eat Ovaltine dry so it may have just been a desperate times call for desperate measures kind of thing.
Now I clearly make much better choices when it comes to food. Well, most of the time. Sometimes you just need some chocolate syrup in your life. At least you won’t have to feel guilty about the quality of the ingredients when you use this one. All in moderation, right?
- 1/4 cup Cocoa Powder
- 1/2 cup Sugar
- 1/2 cup Water
- 1/4 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- Touch of Salt
- Mix ingredients in pan.
- Heat on medium, stirring frequently until thickened. It will thicken a bit more once it's cooled.
- Cool and pour into container and store in fridge.
You can store this in a jar but I keep mine in a glass cruet. It makes it easier to pour, plus it looks pretty. You want to be sure to store this in the fridge.
I like to get a lot of my ingredients from Thrive Market. It’s an online store that is like a cross between Costco and Whole Foods. You can get really good deals on natural food. You can also get money back on your membership fee if you use Ebates, one of my favorite cash back sites!
Once you try this you will never go back to the store bought. It’s delicious, easy to make and has better ingredients. I just have to keep reminding myself that lactose and I aren’t friends so I can’t have too much chocolate milk!
What are your favorite things to put chocolate syrup on? Anything strange like my story?
