Have a Green Halloween

It’s almost Halloween time, 2nd most commercially successful holiday. There are many ways to have a greener Halloween, here are just a few ways.
Candy
Halloween candy sales average about 2 billion dollars annually in the United States. That’s a lot of candy and most of it is full of un-natural ingredients that can be harmful. The Natural Candy Store has some great options so be sure to check them out. The shipping deadlines will be here soon, so hurry and get your order in.

Your kids are also going to need bags to hold all of their candy. ChicoBag has some very cute options and they also are having their yearly contest to pick next year’s design.
What about the candy your kids get while trick-or-treating? You can trade your kids there choice of natural candy, homemade goodies, or non-food items. Some dentists will also let kids trade candy for money. Another great option is reverse trick-or-treating. Visit Global Exchange for more info and to order a kit.
Costumes
You can find a lot of great costume ideas on Green Halloween’s blog. Another idea is to swap costumes with friends and family, or even set up a swap event in your town.
Decorations
Etsy.com is one of my favorite places to get decorations. You can find a lot of great eco-friendly options and you are supporting the artists. You can also make DIY decorations using eco-friendly materials.
You can also find some great deals from EcoMom.

I like the idea of swapping costumes! I would add to your suggestions that you should avoid chocolate candy – unless it is fair trade – because it likely involves slave child labor.:(
I agree, I should have included info on Fair Trade and palm oil. But I have posted about both in the past and Natural Candy Store sells a lot of Fair Trade stuff, and the reverse trick-or-trick kit I talked about is Fair Trade. That is something I would have enjoyed as a kid. I have always been the little activist haha.
The reusable bags look really cute! You can also use smaller reusable sandwich bags like the ones made by lunchskins – they have really nice colors, plus, they’d automatically limit the amount of candy because of their size:)
