Easy Chocolate Cake and Cream Cheese Icing
| March 10, 2011 | Posted by Lisa Sharp under Real Food, Recipe |
Abbie over at the Farmer’s Daughter is having a Birthday Cake Recipe Round-up for her birthday. I tend to do different desserts for birthdays but this is my favorite chocolate cake recipe and I have made it for several birthdays. I love this recipe because you can make a 8 in round cake, which is prefect for small families. You can double it if you want a full size cake but I always just make a small one. You can use any icing but I’m sharing one of my favorites.
The Basics of Peak Oil
| March 6, 2011 | Posted by Lisa Sharp under Energy |
You have likely heard a lot of complaining lately about gas prices. We are currently seeing a short term increase because of the unrest in the middle east – where around 10% of our oil comes from – but soon we will be seeing long term increases. This is due to the fact that oil is a limited resource and we are using it to fast. Back in 1956 M. King Hubbert proposed the theory of peak oil. Sadly many didn’t believe him – many still don’t – and we haven’t taken it seriously. There are signs we are starting to listen and hopefully we won’t be to late.
If you are new to the theory of peak oil here is a great short film explaining it.
Had you heard about peak oil? What is your family doing to reduce your need of fossil fuels?
McDonald’s Take on Oatmeal
| March 2, 2011 | Posted by Lisa Sharp under Real Food |
You have likely heard McDonald’s is now offering oatmeal. One may think, wow such a healthy food at a fast food restaurant. Hard to believe right? Well you shouldn’t believe it. This oatmeal has 21 ingredients, loads of sugar and calories. It fits right in on McDonald’s menu. The problem is people are going to believe it’s healthy. Just watch their ad.
Sure it’s got oats in it and even fruit, but what are all the other ingredients? Also did you notice when taking about ingredients maple is left out? Well that’s because there is no real maple. Who knew oatmeal could be so unhealthy.
