Green Washing Water

Can drinking bottled water every be good for the environment? PepsiCo wants you to think it is by launching Eco-Fina. The bottles use 50% less plastic but do we even need that much?
They say it’s 100% recyclable but Aquafina bottles were as well. Why not make them from recycled plastic or bio-plastics? Even then single use bottles aren’t green.
Now PepsiCo is going to be a BlogHer sponsor, handing out water bottles to everyone and setting up recycling bins to make it look greener. But how many people will recycle the bottles? And why not hand out refillable water bottles?
I’m a member of my local recycling coalition and plastic bottles are the subject of our meetings every month. People don’t take the lids off, put all of it in plastic bags, they don’t sort it, and there is to much of it! We can’t get anyone to buy it. We have tons of plastic just sitting at our recycling center waiting to be sold.
And all of that over looks the oil used for the plastic, oil used to ship the bottles, energy to make them, the ones that don’t get recycled, the energy to recycle them and all the harmful effects of the BPA in the bottles.
Most bottled water (including Eco-Fina) is tap water. Yes you are paying for tap water! Really you are paying for marketing. So get a reusable bottle or heck use a glass jar! Whatever you do ditch the bottled water.
Just look at all the plastic and energy being used in their own video.
