Our Food And Its Safety

Seems like everyday there is a new food recall. Currently the FDA has three listed, Pistachios, Peanuts and Plainview Milk Cooperative Ingredient.
Eating is getting more and more dangerous. You would think that as we get more technology our food would get safer but quite the opposite is happening.
Instead of demanding healthy and safe food, we are demanding fast and cheap food. That food comes with a cost. Around 90% of the food in your grocery store is made with corn. Corn has become very unhealthy over the years. It used to have a lot of protein with a little bit of carbohydrates and now it’s almost most all carbohydrate and a little protein.
Something is very wrong with our food industry when it’s cheaper to buy a fast food burger than fresh veggies. Parents are having to choose between giving their families a healthy meal or paying bills. A poor child in the US is 2.6 times more likely to become obese than upper and middle class children.
Thankfully there is a lot of hope for our food industry. We have the power to change it. Every time you buy food you are telling the industry what kind of food you want.
Awareness is also key and with documentaries like King Corn and Food Inc. people are learning where their food really comes from and are demanding that it changes.
So next time you are shopping for food think about our food future and buy foods that are healthy for your family and healthy for the earth. Local and organic foods are becoming more wide spread and affordable. And remember the long term costs. Healthy foods mean a healthier you so less health care costs in the future.
This is my post for this month’s Green Moms Carnival hosted by Alline from Ecovillage Musings.
