DayTwo: Lent
| February 27, 2009 | Posted by Lisa Sharp under Uncategorized |
I feel a little out of the loop already without facebook and myspace. Those who follow me on twitter my have seen I’m on there more now haha. My friend Christi (my kid product reviewer) said I’m not missing much and it’s not the same without me, aw!! (I doubt it’s true hehe)
As far as the carbon fast, I haven’t been feeling good today so I signed petitions for my extra green thing today. I needed to do something where I could just sit on my ass. I’m very hopeful this is just allergies and I will feel better tomorrow.
You know you don’t feel good when you are very thirsty but the kitchen seems really far away so you can’t decide if it’s worth it. I’m very hopeful that all the benadryl I have had today will mean I will sleep tonight. We are on day three of very little sleep. Which has made my fibro worse, or my fibro made me unable to sleep. Not sure which came first.
Well since I’m guessing there are tons of typos in this blog and it’s just kind of running on, I’m going to get on twitter or watch some Daily Show or South Park.
“Clean” Coal
| February 26, 2009 | Posted by Lisa Sharp under Uncategorized |
I sadly just learned coal is being mined very close to me! Thankfully a group is already working to stop this. CPASA: Citizens for the Protection of the Simpson Aquifer.
This is a very beautiful area were many like to camp, hike and I love to take pictures there. I have learned that one of the springs I liked to visit has been totally dry for two months. The coal mining is using the same amount of water in one month as the near by town would use in a year.
I hope that anyone in Oklahoma that is reading this will think about joining the CPASA. Even if you aren’t in Oklahoma we could use your help!
Here are other sites that are helping to stop “clean coal” and mountain top removal.

Day One: Lent
| February 26, 2009 | Posted by Lisa Sharp under Uncategorized |
Today I picked out trash in my yard and in front of my house. We live in a not so eco neighbor, there is a ton of litter. We are also across from two businesses and they don’t help.
I picked up (none of it ours) two plastic bags, a plastic cup from Taco Bell, a plastic water bottle (which is going to be recycled), a plastic ring from milk or juice, and few pieces of paper.
I blew in the last few days while we had a lot of wind. One plastic bag gone caught on my rose bush, that was fun to get off!
I also went to my churches Ash Wednesday service. After the service a lady in our church talked to me about helping green the church so that’s cool. I’m going to meet with her soon to go over ideas and such. My green contacts should come in handy. I may ask for some help from you guys as well.
As far as giving up Facebook/Myspace… myspace isn’t an issue yet, I don’t get on there much. Facebook however is already hard! I forgot to change my settings so I get e-mails when someone says something to me and such and I just have to delete them. I went to facebook a few minutes ago without thinking about it, typed in my password and everything but then it didn’t go through and which made me snap out of it and remember what I was doing lol.
I still need ideas for the carbon fast.
A Carbon Fast For Lent…
| February 25, 2009 | Posted by Lisa Sharp under Uncategorized |
No I’m not Catholic, I grew up Presbyterian and still attend my local Presbyterian church at times and now I’m more of a Quaker (yes like the oats haha, more on that later.) but I still find Lent to be a good time to change yourself for the better and have some time to reflect.
Even if you aren’t religious you can do this. Last year some churches did carbon fasts for Lent and I’m going to do one this year. So far I don’t have much on my list so I need your help. I need ideas that I’m not already doing and won’t force others (my husband) to have to do the same.
Here is what I have so far-
1 e-mail wal-mart
2 pick up trash
3 e-mail OG&E (my electric company) about mountain top coal removal
4 read a green book
5 reuse something
6 No meat
7 No computer
8 use ecosmartsearch.com
9 Have a waste free day
10 use goodsearch.com
(each thing is for one day so I need 30 more things!)
Two Words…

Asthma sucks!!
I had a really bad asthma attack and now that the albuterol (all three doses) and steroid have done their job the benadryl is kicking in and I think I can finally sleep.
You will have to wait for a blog.
Goodnight!
Do One Green Thing!
| February 23, 2009 | Posted by Lisa Sharp under Uncategorized |
I will have to make this blog quick because I should be asleep… (I will add to it tomorrow)
My mission for everyone tomorrow is to do one green thing! If you already do a lot pick one new thing. Here are some ideas if you need them-
If you have a burned out light bulb replace it with a CFL bulb.
Donate old items you don’t need anymore.
Donate to a green cause.
Plant a tree (if it’s warm enough where you live).
Pick up a piece of trash.
Recycle at least one item.
Ask for no straw in your drink.
Use a reusable bag.
Drink tap water (or filtered at home) in place of bottled.
Take your own lunch to school or work.
Replace one chemical cleaner with a natural one.
Use once less paper napkin.
There are all kinds of things you can do. From very small to huge. But even if you choose something really small if even just 100 people (which is around the number of hits I get a day) would do this think of the difference it could make.
And if each of you ask people to do the same on your blog it could be a very green day.
Report back with what you did! I will link to your blog in a follow up blog on Tuesday. (over look typos for now please, it’s 12:40 a.m. and I’m only awake cause of my asthma…)
How Do You Not Care???
| February 19, 2009 | Posted by Lisa Sharp under Uncategorized |
So is it just me that has this idea that I MUST save the world?? I see a piece of trash and that side of me says “I must pick that up, it’s bad for the planet..” while the smarter and germophobic side of me goes “NO NO think about what could be on that!” It’s a toss up which side wins. I normally stand there like an idiot weighing the pros and cons.
I get mad every time I go to drop off recycling because people in this town can’t read and recycle the wrong things or just dump their trash in the recycle bins. How many signs do we need that say “No Plastic Bags?” My smarter/germaphobic side has always won that fight… When you are 5’2″ digging through a huge dumpster like recycle bin is not the best idea. Doesn’t that just paint a great picture?
I just can’t wrap my head around how people can just not care about, well everything. I feel guilty all the time because of something haha. Like say I get a cold and someone I know that was around me gets it and I’m thinking “oh crap I didn’t wash my hands enough.”
Some people I think get a bit tired of my “save the world-ness” (hey if our former president can make up words so can I!) seeing that I see it as my job to tell everyone of the dangers of HFCS, dyes, and even the very yummy cookie they are eating. And maybe sometimes including gross details. I don’t mean to as such, I just don’t want them to eat that cookie without knowing that the dyes in it have been banned in most counties because it causes cancer, the chocolate used child labor and some kid may have lost a finger harvesting it and got a penny for a week of work, and all the chemicals in that cookie you know show up in breast milk and are being linked to lots of nasty health problems.
Living with me is fun! Just ask my husband.
I can suck the joy right out of that cancer causing, kid killing cookie! I think I understand now why ignorance is bliss.
I don’t seem to remember for very long that some people want to be ignorant about what they eat, what the buy, and what they do… Why wouldn’t everyone want to know the gross details of why they should buy free-range chicken?! And some how me telling you how the chicken lived makes you not want to eat your chicken??
Hey at least I’m not out throwing blood on everyone or something! And it’s not that I’m judging people, I’m really not. And I don’t give a crap if people I don’t know go smoke crack or something. As long as it doesn’t hurt other people I really don’t care, I’m a freaking Libertarian. BUT if I care about you at all I don’t want to see you do things that I feel hurt you or others.
So see really if I start ranting to you about what you are eating or whatever it happens to be it’s because I care about you, so while you tune me out (my husband can give you tips for that I’m sure) just keep remembering that it’s because I care!
Let’s Recycle Something Together!
| February 18, 2009 | Posted by Lisa Sharp under Uncategorized |

During the trip to Norman for Valentine’s day my husband and I went to Lowes in hopes of being able to drop off a CFL bulb like you can at Home Depot but they don’t accept them. When we got back I e-mailed them about this and asking if they will in the future, here is what they said-
Dear Lisa Sharp, Lowe?s observes strives to be a responsible global citizen by respecting and protecting the environment and we are pleased to learn that customers like you have undertaken recycling of CFL?s and fluorescent tubes. We encourage our customers to follow the guidelines their community has set for collection and disposal of compact fluorescent light bulbs as well as other material. You may be interested to know that for four consecutive years the Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy have recognized Lowe?s efforts for promoting CFLs and other Energy Star qualified products that reduce energy consumption and protect the environment. Lowe?s follows eco-conscious store building practices including installation of cool roofs, advanced storm water controls, high-efficiency heating and air conditioning, fluorescent store lighting and neighborhood friendly parking lot lighting at our stores. As the second largest appliance retailer in the United States, Lowe?s has the largest in-store selection of ENERGY STAR qualified appliances. Our other environmentally friendly product offerings include organic gardening options, native plant species and items that contained recycled material. Again, thank you for writing us with your comments. We feel that without your feedback we cannot continue to improve to meet your needs. Respectfully, Kim Lowe’s Customer Care
It’s great that Lowes is doing so much for the environment but they can still do more. Closing the loop for the CFL’s would be great since they do sell so many CFL’s.
What I’m asking is that everyone takes just a few minutes to e-mail Lowes (WeCare@Lowes.com) and tell them that you want them to take back CFL’s to help stop CFL’s from ending up in our landfills.
If you do write please post a comment or e-mail me(love_cats05@yahoo.com) so I can add you to a list I will be putting on my sidebar with a link to your blog if you have one.
Also please add the picture at the top of the post on your blog with a link back to this post.
The Waste Of Valentine’s Day
| February 16, 2009 | Posted by Lisa Sharp under Uncategorized |

Valentine’s Day can be a really nice holiday but all to often it’s wasteful. Sure it’s a hallmark holiday but you can make it about love and make it something special or you can give in and just buy a lot of plastic crap with no thought at all.

I’m very lucky, my husband put a lot of thought in to my gifts which included a heart box made from elephant poop (yes elephant poop!), two roses made from elephant poop, organic cookies, a trip to a near buy town, and he took me to the zoo. We had a great time and their was very little waste!

Here are some facts about Valentine’s Day and the waste involved.
“About 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year.”
“Over 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold each year.”
“35,000 kg of CO2 is emitted by growing 12,00 rose stems in Holland and 55 million roses are given globally on Valentine’s Day.”
So how waste-free was your Valentine’s Day??
