It’s almost time to break out the wool jackets. Is yours still a bit dirty from winter? Is it just smelling a bit musty? Whatever the issue, you may think you need to head to the dry cleaners but what about the effects of perchloroethylene, the chemical used in dry cleaning.
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences says: “Short-term exposure to Perchloroethylene can cause adverse health effects on the nervous system that include dizziness, fatigue, headaches, sweating, incoordination, and unconsciousness. Long-term exposure can cause liver and kidney damage.”
The International Association for Research on Cancer beliefs that perchloroethylene is a “probable carcinogen.”
The EPA says: “Exposure to perchloroethylene can occur in the workplace or in the
environment following releases to air, water, land, or groundwater.” They also stated: “Plants and animals living in environments contaminated with PERC can store small amounts of the chemical.”
So still want to make that trip to the dry cleaners? Don’t fear, in some areas you can find environmentally friendly dry cleaners just ask TreeHugger.com. But they aren’t in all areas and it still costs a lot and takes time, wouldn’t it be nice to dry clean at home? Well now you can!
Refresh’n Dryer Towels make dry cleaning easy, quick, and eco-friendly. The micro fiber cloth cleans without the use of chemicals. All you do is wet the huge micro fiber cloth, stick the cloth and up to three items in your dryer, and turn on the dryer for just a few minutes.
The cloth helps lift dirt off the clothes, reshape them, and take out wrinkles. You can use it to clean just slightly dirty clothes to save a load of laundry.
The cloths can be used 25 times, that is up to 75 items per cloth! $1.50 is the average cost of dry cleaning a men’s button down shirt. That is $112.50 for 75 shirts. With the Refresh’n Dryer Towel you would save $102.55.
To make the whole thing more environmental the cloth can be reused as a cleaning cloth or a great cloth to make your own reusable Swiffer dust.
All of that is why I was so happy to find this product and get the chance to try it. I don’t own a lot of dry clean only clothes but I do have a few pieces. I had two that were needing to go to the dry cleaners but I didn’t want perchloroethylene in my home or on my skin.
I used the cloth first on a silk shirt which was very wrinkled. I stuck it in the dryer and when I took it out it smelled nice and fresh and was much less wrinkled. So far so good!
The other item I had in need of cleaning was a harder one, my wool coat. It had some of my dog’s hair and my hair on it. Also lint which wool coats seem to be a magnet for. So I threw it in there, turned it on, came back and while a few of my hairs were still there the lint and dog hair was almost totally gone! It was softer and smelled fresh. I use the still slightly wet cloth and wiped of the rest of the hair and lint.
I’m very happy with this product. Now if I find that dry clean only clothing item I just HAVE to have, I can buy them without fear of perchloroethylene.
If you already use another at home dry cleaning product, remember those still use chemicals in the cleaner and a lot more waste and money. You won’t save the over $100 but you will still save. With our economy the way it is right now every dollar counts.

In the picture the Refresh’n towel looks very much like a microfiber towel. How is it different?
For one I have never seen on this big. Also it feels a bit different and seems thicker than others. For a better answer you may want to ask the company haha.
Thanks, I was just curious.
